North America · US Treasury (press release)

Bank of America was hit with more than $1.21 billion in penalties for failing to report more than $5 billion in suspicious transactions on time, and admits it willfully broke the law

Most of that is one penalty. FinCEN, the Treasury office that collects banks' suspicious-transaction reports, is assessing $1.2 billion, and that counts the $750 million the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, which regulates national banks, imposed for not fixing problems a December 2024 order had told the bank to fix. That $750 million is the largest penalty in the regulator's history. A separate $11.6 million sanctions settlement brings the total past $1.21 billion. FinCEN says over $1 billion of the late-reported activity touched national-security risks, including Chinese money laundering networks, fraud, and trade-based money laundering tied to the US southwest border.
